Sip Away Stress

If you're feeling overwhelmed by stress, drinking black tea just might be the antidote.  According to a 2006 University College London study of 75 adults, sipping four cups of black tea throughout the day can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol by as much as 20 percent.  (Cortisol raises blood pressure and can weaken the immune system according to the National Institutes of Health.)  Study participants who drank tea also reported feeling more relaxed after dealing with difficult situations than those who consumed other caffeinated drinks.

Seven Keys to a Positive Attitude

Great attitude isn't something that magically happens.  Rather, it involves a choice people make in advance about how they're going to deal with life's events.  The following are seven keys to a great, positive mental attitude.

1.   Decide your attitude in advance.  You, and only you, have the complete ability to control your attitude.  And there's a big difference between a bad attitude and a bad mood.  Moods are temporary.  Attitude are permanent.  Whatever the situation, it's the attitude that makes it good or bad.  So the next time you think there's going to be bad traffic, or whatever the situation may be, push your advanced decision button and decide to have a good attitude about it.  You'll be surprised at the outcome.

2.   Visualize success.  Keep in mind that what we visualize often becomes true.  Why do you think those diet companies suggest you put a picture of yourself at an ideal weight on the refrigerator?  Right!  They want you to visualize success.  Lance Armstrong, seven-time winner of the Tour de France, always saw himself crossing the finish line first.  Visualize success.

3.   Be a whatever-it-takes person.  Be a problem solver.  Not a problem giver.  There's an old, old, saying, "Whether you say you can, or you can't, you're right."  Think of ways to get things done.  Don't think of ways it can't be done.

4.   Resist negative tendencies.  Ever have lunch or a meeting with Mr. or Mrs. Negative?  They love to wallow in the negative.  What went wrong, who failed, why it didn't work, and so on.  Mr. and Mrs. Negative love to have your ear, hoping they can bring you down.  Keep away from these types of people - the ones who complain all of the time.  They're out to have you play on their team.  Avoid negative people and tendencies.

5.   Embrace change.  Change is the one thing we can count on.  and in most, not all, but most cases, change is better.  The great thing about change is that if we don't like it, we can "change" our mind and try something else.  Se change is a good thing.  It's fun,  It's challenging.  It's needed in so many cases.

6.   Humor, energy and enthusiasm.  Life without these three best friends would be pointless, or at least much more difficult.  Surround yourself with individuals who have these three characteristics.  Make sure you have the ability to laugh at yourself.  The energy you bring to your profession or life is critical to the success of everything you do.  Energy creates enthusiasm.  So, thee three elements are critical to having a positive mental attitude.

7.   Be grateful for what you have.  A genuine, positive mental attitude has no room for jealousy.  Others may have more possessions, but positive people are always grateful for what they have right now.  And in some cases it may not seem as though we have enough to be grateful for, but ask yourself if you lost what you have, what would you ultimately be left with?  What are you most grateful for?

Aromatherapy Massage Relieves Menstrual Cramps

As many as 93 percent of women experience menstrual cramps, and up to 26 percent of women experience severe pain, some studies suggest.  Research from a South Korean school of nursing shows that massaging an aromatherapy blend of lavender, clary sage and rose essential oils onto the abdomen just before and during a woman's menstrual period provides relief from cramps.

A research team at the Wonkwang Public Health College School of Nursing tested the traditional uses of essential oils on 67 female college students who rated their menstrual cramps greater than 6 on a 10-point visual analogue scale.  These subjects were randomized into three groups: an experimental group that received a 15-minute daily abdominal massage using the essential oil blended in a base of sweet almond oil; a placebo group that received abdominal massage using sweet almond oil without any essential oils; and a control group that received no treatment.

The treatments were given one week before the women's periods through the first day of their menstrual cycle.  The lavender, clary sage, and rose essential oils were blended in a 2:1:1 ratio, diluted in sweet almond oil at a final concentration of 3 percent.  The 15-minute abdominal massage consisted of slow, smooth and continuous strokes.  Beginning with clockwise effleurage strokes in the shape of a diamond, the massage therapist then placed her left hand on her right hand and both hands on the right lower abdomen to perform a stroke that went to the ribs and then across the abdomen to the left lower abdomen.  This was followed by gentle kneading at the left and right of the waist and then stroking across the abdomen.  Then the effleurage diamond stroke began again.  A cushion was placed under the subject's knees to keep her abdomen relaxed.

The data collected showed that menstrual pain decreased by more than 50 percent in the women who received aromatherapy massage; there was no improvement in the placebo and control groups.  The authors concluded that, "Aromatherapy can be regarded as a safe, simple, cost effective and viable method of care," and that it could be offered as part of the care of women experiencing menstrual cramps.
